Structural Changes in Two Different Types of Oxide Glass Melts: Borates and Metaphosphates
نویسندگان
چکیده
X-ray diffraction experiments of molten oxide glasses, which give new insights into the structure of melts, were carried out. Using modern means (synchrotron radiation, image plates, container-less hightemperature technique) it could be shown that the short range order of melt and solid glass is often qualitatively different. If vitreous B203 or binary borate glasses with low content of network modifier are heated up above T&, the network topology begins to alter. With rising temperature more and more of the boroxol groups are replaced by independent B03 groups. While melting a metaphosphate glass, however, structural changes of another kind take place. In solid glass the environment of the network modifier ions is similar to the one found in crystalline modifications, and their distances to the surrounding P04 tetrahedra have narrow distributions. In the melt, however, these distances scarcely become evident, probably owing to the increased thermal motion of the modifier ions.

The local environments around Ti, Cr, and several light rare-earth elements (La, Ce, and Nd) were investigated by in-situ XANES spectroscopy in a number of complex borosilicate glasses and melts (to 1120 °C) that are used for nuclear waste storage. Examination of the high-resolution XANES spectra at the Ti K-edge shows that the average coordination of Ti changes from ~5 to ~4.5. Cr is dominantl...
متن کاملA NEW GENERATION OF OXYNITRIDE GLASSES CONTAINING FLUORINE
Oxynitride glasses are found as grain boundary phases in silicon nitride ceramics. They are effectively alumino-silicate glasses in which nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in the glass network, and this causes increases in glass transition and softening temperatures, viscosities (by two to three orders of magnitude), elastic moduli and microhardness. Calcium silicate-based glasses containing fluo...

Using a transient hot-wire method, the thermal conductivity of the CaO–SiO2–B2O3 mold flux system was measured. The effects of temperature, BO1.5 concentration and basicity on the thermal conductivity were considered, along with structural investigation by Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the addition of boron oxide caused both a decrement and increment of thermal conductivity, depending o...
